My work currently explores the concept of balance and tension as an over arcing theme in new works. I am exploring how my own experiences inform my artwork. I find that working with these relatively cheap materials gives me the chance to disguise what materials I am using. I want the viewer of my work to take the time to consider the materials themselves and how they are tied to the content of the work. I have used Oak wood and plywood, as well as steel and I have used yarn as textile elements in my work. The main aspect of my current work is yarn, which is stretched and tied around multiple frames. Using the technique of Knotless Net, I decided to stretch and tie yarn to the geometrically shaped frames. As my time at school comes to an end, I am forced to find the balance between my artistic dreams, home life, and relationships with career development. The idea of how the multiple aspects of someone’s life blends together to creates a singular vision is very appealing to me. It’s not just the metaphysical idea of balance, that interests me, it’s the visual balance. That is the idea that I am striving for within all my current pieces. Using tension, I am heading toward the visual idea of stretching. The definition of tension is “the state of being stretched tight” but also “mental or emotional strain.” The end of something that you have lived for twenty plus and starting something new is stressful. I am sure I share these feelings of trying to balance the uneasiness of leaving what is comfortable and accepting this stage of life with may new graduates. I am talking to the discussion of what comes next in life after major milestones through my art.
